About Me
My name is Kayla Reed, but to those who know and love me best, I’ll always be “Kay”.
When I was a freshman at the University of Iowa, I spent almost as much time styling and protecting my hair as I did studying. That hard water and first icy winter weren’t kind to my curls at all. What was once shiny, bouncy hair was stripped down to dry, dull tresses that I couldn’t revive, no matter how hard I tried.
But what was crazier, is that I started finding out that other Black girls on campus were experiencing the same problem. That’s when I knew I had to come up with a solution.
I tried it all from conditioners to YouTube remedies to contemplating shaving it all off! Then I decided to try hair extensions as a way to rest my natural hair while I figured out what to do with it next.
I started off with traditional sew-ins but those still left my leave-out damaged from excessive heat and overstyling. It wasn’t until my junior year of college that I broke out from my comfort zone started researching healthy ways to construct and style full coverage wigs. I wanted something custom fitted to my face, and style. But between a full class load, work, and my other responsibilities, I didn’t have time to sit and hand sew wigs. So I kept at my research, and that’s when I discovered the secret weapon already in my possession: my sewing machine.
With my sewing machine I was able to construct an entire wig in just a few hours, braid my hair down, and pop the wig right on. This saved me so much time, effort, and money since I no longer had to figure out what to do with my hair, how to do it, and what new products I needed to try that week (if you know, you know)!
From there, It's Baby Kay was created and my vision was brought to life with the intention to help other women protect and revive their own natural hair as well. While the idea and many choices of closures, frontals, and wigs can be intimidating at first to many, please know that I am a text or email away from any questions you may have!
